Producer

Family owners Sue and Greg White hired winemaker Simon Waghorn when they created Whitehaven in 1994, taking over the old Grove Mill winery. In 2002 they moved to their new state of the art winemaking plant. Grapes are sourced from their own vineyards and selected contract growers, overseen by their own viticulturists.

Focused on Marlborough wines, their Sauvignon Blanc is rated by many in the industry as one of the top Sauvignon Blancs in New Zealand.

Grape varieties

Sauvignon Blanc

Region

Marlborough is located on the northeastern edge of the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Marlbourgh started making wine in 1875, however, the modern story really starts in 1973 when Montana planted Sauvignon Blanc and took the wine by storm. In addition to its variety defining Sauvignon Blanc it producers excellent Rieslings and Pinot Noirs.

Style

Zingy, fresh, fruity Sauvignon Blanc style wines. High on acidity, big on flavour.
Can be either full of gooseberries, green apples, grassy aromas or more subtle, tropical passion fruit flavours.
The New Zealand style tends to be more intense than the mineral, stony style you’ll find in Sancerre & Pouilly Fume – the home of the Sauvignon Blanc grape in Loire, France. Look out for Chilean Sav Blancs for good value for money.
