Alexander Valley Vineyards is a family-owned winery in Sonoma County in California, bought in 1962 by Harry and Maggie Wetzel when it was prune orchards and pastures. They planted vineyards shortly afterwards and added the winery in 1975, which includes underground caves for barrel storage. The land once belonged to Cyrus Alexander, for whom the valley is named. Fourteen grape varieties are grown, each of which is matched to a specific soil type and exposure. The winery produces about 100,000 cases annually.

Grape varieties

Gruner Veltliner

Zingy, fresh, fruity Sauvignon Blanc style wines. High on acidity, big on flavour.
Can be either full of gooseberries, green apples, grassy aromas or more subtle, tropical passion fruit flavours.
The New Zealand style tends to be more intense than the mineral, stony style you’ll find in Sancerre & Pouilly Fume – the home of the Sauvignon Blanc grape in Loire, France. Look out for Chilean Sav Blancs for good value for money.
