- The Wine Society with Ewan Murray
Overview
Ewan Murray is responsible for PR for The Wine Society, he has been with the society since 2004 when he began by managing their tastings and events and a year ago in 2013, changed roles to manage the PR. He gives us an overview of The Wine Society which was founded in 1874 as a co-operative wine merchant that customers joined to become member/shareholders. The business was mail order in origin but now is also online and has a showroom in Stevenage. They have 125,000 active members in the UK, 1,200 wines on their list and a £75m turnover. Ewan explains how the joining fee works and how members can benefit from the services of the society and from the co-operative operating as not profit maximising or growth maximising. They have grown steadily through word of mouth recommendations from members and from good press coverage and reviews in magazines and the Sunday papers. The wines are delivered to members from 8 depots across the UK.
