Duncan Brown on Brown Brothers

This show was published 13 May 2016

Overview

Duncan is European export manager for Brown Brothers. He takes us through their history, starting with the very first vintage back in 1889 in Milawa, North Victoria. The Brown family came to Australia looking to dig gold but instead began growing grapes, planting Shiraz, Moscato and Riesling. They were different from other growers in that they were making still wines instead of fortified. They were hit by phyloxxera in Victoria in 1916 but went onto achieve many innovations and firsts for Australia in wine making terms. By the 1980s they had built a new experimental winery on a very small scale to encourage innovation with new wine styles and teach cutting edge wine making skills. The region around Milawa is known as King Valley but Browns also have vineyards in the Murray River (Swan Hill) and Heathcote as well as in Tasmania where they are the biggest producer. They buy in about 40% of their grapes from contract growers.
