- Wrotham Pinot with Phillip Watts from Barnsole Vineyard
Overview
Phillip tells us about the grape Wrotham Pinot that he is experimenting with at Barnsole Vineyard. It's origins reputedly date back to when the town, Wrotham, in the county of Kent, was first built in Roman times but there is debate as to whether it is either a Pinot Meunier or Pinot Noir clone (it is not precisely known) but it is definitely Vitis Vinifera. The grape seems to have good disease resistance although it is affected by powdery mildew. Phillip will not know until the plantings are more established.
As well as several German grape varieties, Phillip also has plantings of Pinot Noir Précoce which ripens early and helps Phillip to manage his production, avoid the busy picking time in the region, two weeks later.
