- Alberto Orengia on Exporting Wine to China
Overview
Alberto is based in Hong Kong representing the famous Frescobaldi wine family. He talks to us about China's wine trade and how fast changing the market is and expensive to enter due to the amount of producers competing for space.
The wine category is dominated by a handful of Chinese brands but winemaking is not profitable and very often the Chinese will blend in wine from America or Australia.
Wine is consumed in the major cities and 2nd/3rd tier cities but not so much in rural areas. Red wine is far more popular than white (white is not a good colour in China) and sparkling wine is a very small market.
The market is split between on and off-premise, with the on-trade consisting of hotels and restaurants serviced by wholesalers and the typical off-trade channels of supermarkets and retail outlets.
