Spotlight on Rioja with Abbie Bennington

This show was published 20 September 2024

Overview

Abbie Bennington DipWSET is a certified Rioja educator and in this spotlight talks to Chris about the region and its climate and grapes.

Rioja is located in North West Spain and divides into 3 sub-regions which are Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa (both cooler at higher altitude) and Rioja Orientale towards the east where it is warmer and dryer.

Tempranillo is by far the key red grape variety used in Rioja followed by Garnacha (high alcohol, red fruit aromas) which is mostly grown in Orientale. The third key grape is Graciano (high acidity and tannins, black fruits). Mazuelo is also used as a blending component, which can produce very high yields and therefore needs to be controlled.

For white Rioja, the dominant grape is Viura (also known as Macabeo) which is creating a much fresher, fruitier style vs barrel-fermented or more traditional oxidative styles.
