Sam Lindo of Camel Valley Vineyard

This show was published 18 July 2008

Sam Lindo is winemaker at the award-winning Camel Valley Vineyard in Cornwall. We find out about the family vineyard and the wines they're producing.

Sam was England's Winemaker of the Year 2007 and works alongside his father Bod Lindo in the family business. Camel Valley Vineyards are located near Bodmin, about a mile from the centre of Cornwall in the south west of England (the foot part).

They make both still and sparkling wine and believe you need to make both in order to make good wine. The first 3 quarters of the juice from the grapes is used for sparkling and the rest, which is less acidic, is used for the still. 50% of production is still and 50% sparkling. They do make a small amount of red wine but prefer to make rose to get the best out of the grapes.

2006 was a big year for England and the wines from that vintage are ageing well, developing honeyed flavours. Seyval Blanc is the main grape for the Camel Valley Sparkling - it has English hedgerow characters which makes the wine style unique to England.

The aim for the future is to stay at the top in terms of quality rather than try to produce larger volumes. Currently they have 16 acres of vines (20,000 vines) at Camel Valley and source double that from contract growers. The 2007 rain during flowering meant that no Seyval Blanc grapes were harvested.
