- UK Wine Show 127 Eduardo Beltran of Faustino on Rioja
Overview
Eduardo Beltran is the marketing director at Bodegas Faustino in Rioja, Spain. We find out about Faustino and the wines of Rioja.
Faustino is a family business, founded in 1861 and is now run by the 4th generation. The Faustino Group has 7 wineries in Spain with 3 in Rioja where they produce wine under 3 main brands - Faustino, Marques de Vitoria and Campillo. The Faustino range is numbered 1, 5 and 7 with Faustino 1 = Gran Reserva, Faustino 5 = Reserva, Faustino 7 = Crianza.
Marques de Vitoria is a more modern style, very fruity, 100% Tempranillo.
They store 9 million bottles in the cellars to age which won't be in the market for 3-6 years, most are Faustino 1 or 5. They don't produce 1 or 5 every year, only in the best vintages when the grapes are very good. They release wine 6 or 7 years per decade.
They don't reserve vineyards specially for the Gran Reserva but assess the quality of grapes from all vineyards to decide which wine they will be used for. Tempranillo is the classic grape for Rioja and is always at least 90% of the blend. They also use a small proportion of Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha.
