UK Wine Show 155 Wine bottles, With Paul McLavin from O-I

This show was published 08 May 2009

Overview

Owen-Illinois (O-I)is the largest manufacturer of glass containers in the world. We find out how wine bottles are manufactured with sales manager Paul McLavin.

The company has manufacturing plants in Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and South America. There are two plants in the UK in Harlow, north of London and Alloa, central Scotland at the heart of the scotch whisky industry.

The main elements for glass are sand (about 80%), soda ash and limestone which gives glass its inert and stable properties. Thes ar mixed and sent to the furnace to be fused and melted. The molten glass is then formed into a rough shape and moved into the blowing section to form the final shape. The formed glass is cooled in an Annealing Lehr, re-heated to 600 degrees and cooled gradually. The surface of the bottle is treated to increase line mobility and prevent abrasions while maintaining strength. Any rejected containers are immediately re-melted.
