- UK Wine Show 167 Wine Auctions with Sothebys Stephen Mould Part 2
Overview
Sothebys are a leading auction house who in addition to books and art sell very fine wine. In part two we look at the path of a bottle of wine going to auction once it has arrived at Sothebys.
Sothebys market their wine auctions to their database of subscribers who are sent catalogues and kept informed of events. They also advertise and use PR to publicise wine sales. New methods of attracting buyers are via the website as Sothebys.com/wine and there has even been a live auction online which attracted new buyers who wouldn’t otherwise have attended in person. Leading up to the day of the auction, key contacts are chased up and the room is prepared. The wines for sale aren’t on site but remain in bonded or duty paid warehouses for delivery or collection after the auction. Sothebys take a commission from both the buyer and the seller at varying rates.
