Overview

Wines from Brazil is looking to develop its wine exports to the UK which currently account for less than 10% of Brazil's wine exports. In this interview Andraia Gimtilinimilan gives an overview of the wine regions in Brazil. The main grape growing regions are to the south, close to Argentina and Paraguay with Campanha the furthest South. But the country also has vineyards as far north as San Francicso valley at 8-9 degrees latitude. The main wine region is Serra Gaucha with 8000 hectares under vine at 600m altitude, producing mostly sparkling wines (including Muscat and the traditional Champagne grapes) and reds (Merlot and Cabernet Franc). Andraia explains how early Italian immigrants brought vines with them but how the county has since embraced French varieties. We also hear how an interesting method called four seasons enables vineyards in the north to be harvested all year round through pruning and irrigation.
