- UK Wine Show 40 Joel Peterson of Ravenswood Winery
Overview
Joel Peterson started his career in wine at the tender age of ten under the instruction of his father! He went on to establish Ravenswood Winery which is now the largest producer of Zinfandel in the world. The first vintage was in 1976 and today Ravenswood produces one million cases of wine of which 76% is Zinfandel. Only red Zinfandel is allowed to be made, not white - Joel continues to stand by his motto of 'No Wimpy Wines Allowed' - robust, full-bodied reds with style and lots of character.
There are 3 quality levels at Ravenswood:
The Vintners blend is Joel's entry level wine and produced in very large volumes.
The County Series wines are the next level up. These are wines from specific regions, including Sonoma and Napa.
The highest quality level are the Vineyard Designated wines from specific vineyards planted between 1884 and 1900 old vine Zinfandel. The winemaking is in the classic style with open top fermenters and small lots e.g. 500 cases.
