UK Wine Show 56 Michael Cox Wines of Chile

This show was published Friday, June 22, 2007

Overview

Michael Cox's family has been in wine since 1810 - as long as Chile has been independent of Spain. Matthew Clark was his great, great, great grandfather. Michael spent his first 20 working years with the eponymous company Matthew Clark before forming Negociants UK in 1990, the UK arm of the Australian winery Yalumba. Michael now heads up the Wines of Chile UK office which was set up in 2003. Their overriding objective is to promote sales and distribution of premium wines above £5.

Merlot/Carmenere vines were once confused with each other and mixed in together but since 1990s producers have been able to tell them apart and grow and vinify the grapes separately.

Cabernet Sauvignon is actually the most widely planted grape variety but more and more grape varieties are coming on line. Syrah was planted 10 years ago and growing Pinot Noir is the ultimate ambition of many Chilean winemakers. Sauvignon Blanc offers the most opportunity in the modern style and of higher quality.

In general terms, Chile can almost bridge the gap between Old World and New World, offering the style of New World wines but developing complexity more in keeping with the Old World.
