UK Wine Show 59 Tim How CEO of Majestic Wines

This show was published Friday, July 13, 2007

Overview

Tim How is CEO of Majestic Wines, the UK's biggest chain of wine warehouses. Tim looks back at Majestic's history and forward to ambitious plans for future growth.

In 1980 the first Majestic wine warehouse was opened managed by a very pioneering Tony Mason who retired as buying director 2 years ago. Majestic grew through the 1980s - strong in London, champagne, first city bonuses of the Thatcher years. On Friday 13th September 1991 Majestic's 35 stores were acquired by Wizard Wine, a small wine business which was formerly part of the Bejam frozen food retailer and part-owned by Tim How and Tony Mason. In 1996 Majestic was floated on the AIM stock market at 40p (today's equivalent). The share price is now over 8 times that and the company has a market capitalisation today of £235m. There has been consistent profit growth since 1992. All staff with 3 years service have share options.

There are now 138 stores (3 in France)and plans to increase to up to 200 stores in the next 7-8 years. This means opening 10-12 brand new stores per year. A typical store has 700-800 wines. The entire Majestic portfolio, including fine wine, is 1200.
