UK Wine Show 75 Murray McHenry of McHenry Hohnen Vintners

This show was published 02 November 2007

Overview

Murray McHenry and David Hohnen produce 600 tonnes of fruit a year and from that they select experimental varieties to produce the McHenry Hohnen range of wines. For Murray the art of winemaking is in the blending and so most of the wines in the range are blends. They adopt sustainable methods for growing grapes with a non-interventional, natural approach following organic principles. They are not certified as organic growers although that is a future goal. They do see variations in the flavour profile of some wines from vintage to vintage but that is part of the interest in the wine. Each is an expression of the grape variety, the soil and the climatic conditions of that particular vintage. Their wines are made to accompany food e.g. Marsanne, Shiraz, Grenache and Tempranillo. Food wines have a more textured style, matured in oak giving a more complex style. Whereas wines made in a more straightforward method e.g. stainless steel, tend to be more easy drinking, quaffing styles, says Murray.
