Overview

Pancho Campo of the Wine Academy of Spain is the organiser of the International Conference on Climate Change and Wine. We caught up with Pancho on the eve of the conference to discuss the key messages.

The Wine Academy of Spain provide WSET courses throughout Spain and are running an international programme to promote Spanish wines. They have taken this programme to the United States, Canada, Brazil, Peurto Rico and this year will go to the US, the Caribbean, Mexico, Dominion Republic, Chile, Argentina then Europe and then at the end of 2008 Asia.

There are about 350 delegates registered for the climate change conference. People will be sitting cabaret-style to create a relaxed atmosphere and encourage discussion amongst delegates. It is the second conference. The goal of the first conference was to create awareness of climate change and global warming. The second conference aims to again create awareness but also to show people what can be done to change things and urge them to take action and do something about it. There is a good representation of the worldwide wine industry with 70% from overseas. In Spain producers are prepared for climate change. They know they will be affected. Pancho is more concerned about cool climate regions with grapes such as Pinot Noir (Burgundy for example) where it will be difficult to maintain the styles they are known for.

The conference will focus on the positives. There is a solution but it requires efforts of everyone in industry from the scientists to the business people. On a global scale beyond wine, Pancho thinks political and economic interests will get in the way of solving the problem but the technology is out there. Investment in renewable energy is crucial. The main message from the conference is to do something today instead of waiting 10 years.
