A third of drinkers can't tell difference between Prosecco and Champagne

New research for Mintel's British Lifestyle report shows over a third of sparkling wine consumers say there is little difference between Champagne and Prosecco and as the reputation of drinks such as Prosecco continues to grow, sparkling wine looks set to overshadow its more illustrious cousin, Champagne.

Mintel's annual report looked into how consumer spending habits have changed over the past five years and almost four in 10 (37%) say they are buying fewer treats for themselves and their families. On the plus side the off-trade has been driving growth in the alcoholic drinks market throughout the recession and was worth £39.5 billion in 2012 and is estimated to grow to £45 billion by 2017.

A Mintel analyst said: Amidst the rising cost of living and biting austerity measures, British consumers are adjusting to the new economic reality, with financial prudence and savvy shopping already the default for many.
