Average bottle price in the UK set to be over £6 per bottle in 2020
The average bottle price in the UK in 2019 was £5.93, up 20p on the year before, and predicted to be over £6 in 2020.
How much the price rise is likely to be will be governed by duty changes which will be announced on the 11th March, when new Chancellor Rishi Sunak will announce his plans.
The Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA) believes that the £6 average bottle price will be breached given the predicated duty rises, the 2016 Brexit referendum driving up importer costs and less promotion in supermarkets.
At the current duty rates a £6 bottle of wine has £2.23 in duty and £1.20 in vat giving a total tax of £3.43, which is 56% of the price of £6 bottle of wine.
