UK Government announces Deposit Return Scheme
Returning bottles for cash will be launched in 2024 in England, Wales & northern Ireland. The Scotland scheme is due to launch in July 2022.
The Scottish proposal, as outlined in its full business case, is set to raise £322m profit over 25 years for the Scottish government. With 20p taken for glass or plastic bottles and aluminium cans, £854 million worth of deposits are estimated never to be returned.
In Scotland, the System Administrator will receive and re-allocate all of the profits. This week, Circularity Scotland Limited was given the role of System Administrator but a statement is yet to be made as to how the profits will be allocated.
