Aldi launch 300g glass bottle
Aldi have launched a wine in a super lightweight glass bottle, claiming to be the first UK supermarket to use the new super light Verallia Bordelaise Air 300g bottle.
Packaging and transportation make up around 50% of the CO2 footprint in a bottle of wine and by reducing the bottle weight, significant carbon savings are possible.
Lanchester Wines will be supplying Aldi with Kooliburra Sauvignon Semillon from Australia. Using bulk shipping of wine and bottling in the UK at Greencroft Bottling, this solution will have the lowest carbon footprint for packaging and transportation of any glass bottle in the UK. Until now, the lightest bottle in the UK was apparently a 345g bottle, already significantly lower than the more standard 400g lightweight bottle.
