World's largest wine appellation is in the States
The world's largest wine appellation is about to come into existence and will be fifty times bigger than Bordeaux. The area, in the United States, will be known as the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA and will cover 4 million hectares, equivalent to 29,914 square miles). The AVA will encompass the four states of Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The move reflects the growing trend, especially in Wisconsin, for tobacco crops to be replaced by grapes as federal tobacco subsidies diminish and wine consumption rises in the US.
