Green wine anyone?

New Zealand's Mobius Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc will be the first wine in the world to display it's carbon emissions for each 125ml glass.

The carbon emissions, which are calculated to measure the environmental impact of factors such as transportation and refrigeration, will be measured separately for each different export market.

Bottles shipped within New Zealand will carry a figure of 140g CO2 whereas bottles sold in Australia will display 190g. Figures for the UK market are yet to be calculated. But a 750ml bottle of wine, at 190g CO2 per glass, is equivalent to a 5km car journey or a 14km ride on the London underground!

But how important is this to consumers? Low prices rather than environmental issues are still the driving force for wine sales but Mobius believes that after the recession people will be looking for products that give them a warm fuzzy feeling.
