Fizz bucks trend over Jubilee
Overall alcohol sales are declining according to Nielsen figures up to July 21st. But what of the Jubilee and Olympic effect this summer? Well in terms of winners it was the Jubilee that struck gold in particular for Gin and Sparkling Wine sales. Gin sales were up by 2% in volume and Sparkling Wine up by 5%.
So who were the winners during the Olympics? Off-trade sales of Beer, Cider, Ready to Drinks and Sparkling Wine saw an increase in the week of the opening ceremony but overall the net effect of the games was said to be minimal. The only other FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) sector that saw an uplift was party food such as snacks for sharing, crisps and confectionery.
Alcohol sales are continuing to decline against a backdrop of duty increases and total alchohol consumption has fallen by 13% in the UK between 2004 and 2011.
