Producer
Criadores have a long history in the Rioja region, and are responsible in one way or another for around a third of all wine which carries the appellation's name. They supply well-made, modern versions of this Spanish classic.
Grape varieties
Tempranillo, Garnacha
Region
Rioja is the leading Spanish wine region and the first to gain a DOCa classification (higher than DOC). 400km north of Madrid, Rioja is divided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. Tempranillo is probably the most widely planted and produces its best wines grown on the clay and limestone slopes of the Rioja Alta and Alavesa, while Garnacha is the focus in the hotter (and sometimes drought-ridden) Rioja Baja
Style
Full-bodied with good chunky tannins that go down well with a rich hearty meal. You can tell these wines have seen oak by the toasty, vanilla aromas as opposed to full-on fruit. You’ll find Rioja and similar styles within this section.
