Producer
Bodegas Valduero, in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, was established in 1983 by the Garcia Viadero family. It’s situated in Gumiel del Mercado, a small village in the county of Burgos, 10 miles northwest of Aranda De Duero. The climate here is continental and frosts are frequent, even in the middle of May. However, the contrasting day and night-time temperatures in summer make the area suitable for producing high-quality wines, in this case from Tinto Fino – more commonly known as Tempranillo. The bodega has 200 hectares of vines on soil mainly composed of limestone and clay with some sandy spots. The vines are traditional low-bush ones so as to naturally limit yields without irrigation, and all the grapes are hand-harvested. In 1999 Valduero added new winery facilities, consisting of three tunnels in the back-mountain where they now practice micro-fermentation in 25,000 litre vats to achieve better pumping and more controlled maceration. The company believes that Tinto Fino from the area ages better in American oak rather than French and barrels are renewed every four years. Valduero has won a number of awards, exports to 30 countries and the Ribereno range is its modern take on Ribera del Duero wine.

Region
Ribera del Duero is 100 miles north of Madrid and arguably Spain’s most trendy wine region. Awarded DO status (DO Ribera del Duero) in 1982, 118 years after the first winery was established. The main grape grown is Tinto Fino while some use Tempranillo and older villages are still allowed to use Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot.
Style
Full-bodied with good chunky tannins that go down well with a rich hearty meal. You can tell these wines have seen oak by the toasty, vanilla aromas as opposed to full-on fruit. You’ll find Rioja and similar styles within this section.
