- Dr John Forrest on Waitaki Valley, New Zealand
Overview
Dr John Forrest of Forrest Estates has planted vineyards in the Waitaki Valley, a sub-region of Central Otago, New Zealand. The soils are high in limestone and the climate is marginal. They have planted Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay (producing a similar style to Chablis). The region has attracted other top producers such as Valli Vineyards, Craggy Range and Waitaki Braids. John has had 5 vintages so far, and being a marginal area he has seen vintage variation, common in the Old World but less so in New World wines, but it is often said that the most expressive wines come from the most marginal areas.
