- Liv-ex 100 index and trading with James Miles
Overview
James Miles is a founder and director of Liv-ex, the leading Fine Wine Exchange. In this final interview we talk about the Liv-ex 100 index.
The Liv-ex 100 index tracks the 100 most traded wines in the fine wine world and is closely related to the trade on the Liv-ex fine wine exchange. The index is 90% weighted to Bordeaux and 60% of the 100 wines listed are first growths. Wines must be regularly traded and they must have a regular price. It is reviewed on a quarterly basis and wines are removed once they are more than 25 years old. The index is production and scarcity weighted so the older the wine gets the smaller the weighting in the index to reflect the fact that there is less supply. It is heavily weighted to younger vintages to reflect trading.
The index is priced in sterling and as at March 2009 was down 20% from its peak in June 2008.
