Isabelle Legeron MW

This show was published 08 January 2010

Overview

Isabelle Legeron MW is the first woman in France to become a Master of Wine. Shortly after passing first time around we asked her how her studies went.

The examinations involve theory papers, tasting papers and a dissertation which can be on any topic of your choice provided it is focused. Throughout the process of learning its important to have a global understanding of wine from the soils in the vineyards right through to the distribution of wine to the market. Isabelle found the dissertation the hardest - having to write in English in a very disciplined way. The tasting papers require you to taste extensively and develop your own way of writing tasting notes. Pre-exams Isabelle spent every weekend with other students tasting and analysing wine. She says the MW makes you think about wine in a very different way and gives you the ability to understand all the options available to make wine.

Isabelle took just 4 years to study which is an achievement in itself with the best track record for an MW at 3 years, with 2 years for the tasting and theory papers and a final year for the dissertation. For Isabelle the highlight was the people she met and the friendships made as well as the classic training that has given her a great understanding of wine at a global level. She now plans to focus on her passion - organic and biodynamics - and is writing a guide to natural wines and putting together a business plan for a natural wine bar in London.
