Paul Millen of NZDFI on vineyard posts

This show was published Friday, October 29, 2010

Overview

Paul Millen of the New Zealand Dryland Forests Initiative (NZDFI) talks about the research and development of sustainable Eucalyptus forests in New Zealand. While many vineyard posts in New Zealand are made using treated pine timber, the Australian Eucalyptus tree is also imported, being naturally more durable than pine. Because supplies of the Eucalyptus are increasingly being depleted the NZDFI has been researching the possibility of growing the trees in New Zealand as a more sustainable resource. Paul explains how the initiative has identified five suitable species that are now being developed as genetically-improved plantation species to be grown in New Zealand.
