- Tony Laithwaite on his vineyards and Flying Winemakers
Overview
Tony Laithwaite of Laithwaites Wine and Direct Wines talks to us about planting vineyards in the UK. Initially Laithwaite bought wine from Mike Roberts at Ridgeview, branded Southridge, but he went onto plant his first 1/4 acre of vines and Mike vinified the wine for them. Tony's wife Barbara is very active in the planting and maintenance of the vines and we hear our their son Henry, a winemaker, has planted 4 hectares in Marlow. Tony also has vineyards in Bordeaux - his first was La Clariere. We also hear how he pioneered the Flying Winemakers project with friend and winemaker Dr Tony Jordan in the 1980s.
