Overview

The Spiral Cellar system was first developed by a Frenchman, Georges Harnois, in 1978, who recognised that few modern houses had cellars, but people still wanted somewhere to store their wine.

Spiral Cellars Ltd is a company dedicated to the supply, delivery and installation of these prefabricated concrete wine cellars. They have been established for over 25 years and are the sole suppliers of concrete wine cellars in the UK. Since 2005 the company has been owned by Adrian and Lucy Hargreaves, and Nigel Hall.

The cellars vary from 1.3 to 3 metres deep and can keep from 650 up to 1,600 bottles in ideal storage conditions. Like a traditional cellar, it relies on the surrounding earth for its insulation, plus an ingenious air-flow system, which mean it requires no power to maintain its constant temperature. The cellars cost from £8000 to £22,000 but once it’s paid for, that’s it – no more expenses except for the wine itself, of course!
