- Bald Hills revisited and the business of wine in Otago with Gary Crabbe
Overview
Gary Crabbe is the wine manager at Bald Hills in Bannockburn, Central Otago. The Bald Hills estate was bought from Blair and Estelle Hunt by the current owner Isao Mita in 2015. Gary talks about the consolidation of the local wine industry and how the wine business in Otago is developing trade. Many new wineries that have opened up since we visited in 2008 and boutique producers are discovering the value of cellar door sales and the tasting room. Larger players, with 40 hectares plus, are using contract growers and are developing distribution networks beyond New Zealand, but generally the region is too niche, too risky and land prices are too high for larger-scale mainstream wine companies to enter.
