This week we feature Tony Jordon the CEO of Australia's Green Point and sister companies Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay. Green Point has recently launched their entire range of sparkling wines under crown seal, the traditional beer bottle top. Not only does Tony believe in the crown seal as a solution to the cork problems for sparkling wine he has a PHD in Chemical Physics so understands the problems.
The company was the first in 2003 to seal with crown seal on their Green Point Z*D, the innovative 'Zero Dosage' sparkling wine. Crown seals are already used with all sparkling wines and Champagnes during the tirage process - during the second fermentation and yeast ageing.
In order to eliminate cork taint problems it made sense to use the crown seal to seal the bottle instead of a Champagne cork. The Champagne bottle is already designed for it and equipment already in place so no investment in machinery was required, minimising the risk of consumer rejection. Now in 2007 Vintage Brut and Vintage Brut Rose as well as non-vintage wines are all under crown seal.
‘Green Point’ is on a spur of land running from Yeringberg Hill to the Yarra river, in the heart of the Yarra Valley. It is the home of Domaine Chandon Australia, where Green Point sparkling and Green Point still wines are produced.
It is named ‘Green Point’ because in the 1850’s the early settlers of the Yarra Valley observed that, each year, as summer advanced and the grass turned straw colour, this property remained green longer than any other. The reason for this is that the ancient alluvial soils at Green Point are deep and therefore retain moisture well into the summer. These soils combined with the Yarra Valley’s cool climate, define a site with ideal ‘terroir’ for growing wine grapes.
Domaine Chandon at Green Point was established in 1986 by Moët & Chandon to produce high quality sparkling and still wines that reflect in their aromas, flavours and structure the Australian terroir in which they are grown.
