- Ian Harris on the WSET during Covid
Overview
In this second interview with Ian Harris, CEO of the WSET, we explore how Covid affected the organisation. Pre-pandemic then WSET had 108,000 students worldwide, which equates to c.2000 a week on average. In March 2020 that weekly number dropped to 100 a week when courses had to go on hold.
Administration of exams did slip during the pandemic, with the team working from home when the office had to close on the 17th March, creating a backlog. On the upside they have innovated with their online classroom for Level 1, 2 and 3 and fast-tracked remotely invigilated exams for Level 1 and Level 2 which you can sit from your own home. These have been facilitated through a third party provider. Ian has experienced this first hand taking the WSET L1 Sake course and sitting the online exam at home to road test the system.
