- Emma Rice of Hattingley Valley Wines
Overview
Chris chats to Emma Rice, head winemaker at Hattingley Valley located in Hampshire, in the South of England. Emma studied wine at Plumpton College and was one of the first students to graduate with a BSc in Vinology. She has always worked in the wine trade in restaurants, retail, vineyards in New Zealand and wine merchants. Around 2012, along with Dr Belinda Kemp, she wrote the UK Winegrowers Handbook, a guide to setting up a vineyard in the UK. At that time, Emma was already working at Hattingley and also on her wine lab business Custom Crush. She met owner Simon Robinson in 2008 right at start, building a state of the art winery with a capacity that is ten times the size of their vineyard. They also buy grapes from contract growers to supplement their own grape supply.
