- Old Vine Register with Drew Noon MW and Rachel Williams
Overview
McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association has developed an Old Vine Register for plantings in the region. This register shines a light on the value of old vines within the region which are 35 to 100 years old.
Shiraz is the number one variety with 100 ha of old vines and Grenache is number two with 70 ha of old vines. Cabernet Sauvignon is the third biggest on the register.
The register tells us something about winemaking historically in the region and which grapes were popular over the years. Interestingly for white grapes, Chardonnay is lower down the list than Chenin Blanc, perhaps reflecting the waning popularity of Chardonnay after its eighties/nineties boom. The oldest vine is the 1887 Paxton vine, the Old Block Shiraz.
