- Vannessa Koko Djaba on Wine Consumption in Ghana
Overview
Vannessa talks to us about the wine market in Ghana and consumption trends. Wines from South Africa, Spain, France are widely available at the entry level also wines from Chile, Australia and USA, Argentina. At the mid to higher end of the market other regions such as Italy are represented. Vannessa's sales approach for Italian wines is less about targeting restaurants and more focused on direct to consumer sales for drinking at home, which then creates demand for Italian wines in hotels and restaurants. Ghana cuisine is very diverse and can be oily, fried, rice-based (Jollof), soups & stews, plantain Fufu (national dish) with complex, sometimes spicy flavours. Whites are more popular than rose with people moving away from sweet white styles. More rounded, easy drinking reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah go well with savoury Ghanaian dishes.
