- Aglianico del Vulture DOC with Elena Fucci
Overview
Aglianico del Vulture DOC is located in Basilicata in southern Italy. Elena Fucci is the winemaker and tells us about the region, the volcanic soils, climate, the wines. The vineyards are planted at an altitude of 600m and enjoy sunny days, low rainfall and cool nights. The grape variety is Aglianico, a red grape, and is also grown in other regions creating different styles of wine. The vineyards are planted on a dormant volcano (Mount Vulture) and the soils contain molten lava ash. The region was awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1971 but in the last 20 years the style has evolved to produce more balanced wines in terms of the acidity, tannins and minerality - key characteristics of the wines. Typically, the grapes are harvested late, during October when the weather is cooler, helping retain a fresh acidity in the juice.
