- Canning Wine with Simon Rollings of the Canned Wine Co
Overview
In this second interview with Simon Rollings of the Canned Wine Co we get into the technicalities of canning wines, talking about the shelf life of wine in cans and how some wines perform better in cans than others. For example, grape varieties which are more reductive, such as Sauvignon Blanc, are less suitable for canning. High levels of thiols in these wines can cause the liner of the can to break down, meaning the wine may come into contact with the aluminium outer layer. This can then cause shelf life issues and off flavours to develop. Simon and his team therefore select wine styles & grape varieties that, as well as being interesting, minimise these technical challenges during the canning process. The small, single serve format means the price point is kept accessible, allowing consumers to try good quality wines at reasonable prices.
