- Spotlight on Climate for WSET L3 Students
Overview
In this spotlight, Chris looks at the effects of climate on viticulture and how important it is in driving the types of grapes and styles of wine that can be made.
- How climate influences the flavours in the grapes - the same grape will develop different flavours according to the climate, from cool, moderate to warm or hot.
- How climate also dictates the acidity and alcohol levels of the wine, influencing the style of the final wine.
- How grapes ripen differently in different climates and why early ripening vs late ripening varieties are suited to certain climates.
At WSET Level 2, climates are categorised by temperature range into 3 groups: cool, moderate and warm.
At WSET Level 3, a fourth climate band is added (hot) and the climates are expanded into Maritime, Mediterranean and Continental.
