- Wine Book Publishing with Hermione Ireland of Academie du Vin Library
Overview
Hermione Ireland is the Managing Director of Academie du Vin Library which was founded by Steven Spurrier and Hugh Johnson in 2019. The first book to launch was a re-publication written by Michael Broadbent, but the majority of their catalogue of 21 books are new publications.
Other wine book publishers in the UK include Mitchell Beazley (World Atlas of Wine and the Pocket Guide, two of the biggest wine publications globally), Penguin, who also publish Jancis Robinson as do Oxford University Press (Oxford Companion to Wine). There is also the Infinite Ideas Classic Wine Library who publish a large range of reference books on wine regions. The pocket wine guide format has largely moved online although versions do still exist. There's been a resurgence in physical books since Covid whilst eBooks and audible formats are great for accessibility.
Discussing some of their publications, Hermione highlights Drinking With the Valkyries, by Andrew Jefford, a book that gives an insight into Andrew's thinking with a collection of 73 columns that he wrote between 2007 and 2022, organized loosely into ten chapters.
We touch on book awards such as the Andre Simon Book Awards, a wine book competition run in the UK, and in the US the James Beard Foundation Book Awards which cover food and drink publications.
For Christmas gifting in 2023, Hermione suggests their latest publication 'On Burgundy', a wine anthology, and if you could only buy one book, then it has to be 'Oz Clarke on Wine'.
