- Riedel The Wine Glass Company with Maximilian Riedel
Overview
Maximilian Riedel is CEO of Riedel The Wine Glass Company, still a family run business now in the 11th generation. They are the oldest glass manufacturer in the world, still producing hand made glasses as well as machine made. We talk a little about the family structure and how Max came to head up the company as CEO. The manufacturing for Riedel is in three factories: handmade glass in Kufstein, Austria (120 glass makers employed) and machine made in two factories in Bavaria, Germany. Max stresses how the skill and art of handmade glass that is needed makes it a challenge to find talented glass makers.
This year they are celebrating 50 years of the Riedel Sommeliers collection that was his grandfather's invention in 1973 using new technology that has been copied and is used today by many other glass manufacturers. The glasses are grape varietal specific and are their top end premium range. Max talks us through some of the other ranges, including Vinum and Restaurant ranges.
The glasses are made from a new formula of crystal glass that does not contain lead (they stopped using lead crystal in 2015) but contains an additive instead. The same crystal is used across all of their ranges, from entry level to premium.
