- Bordeaux Sub Regions with Abbie Bennington Part 3
Overview
In this spotlight we focus on the sub-regions of Bordeaux.
On the left bank, Médoc is divided into the northern area, the Bas-Médoc and the southern area Haut-Médoc. The main appellations in the Médoc from a WSET L3 perspective are St Estephe, St Julien, Margaux and Pauillac.
Also on the left bank, Graves is home to Pessac-Léognan with its gravel soils, producing high quality reds but also has a reputation for high quality whites from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Sauternes and Barsac are famous for their botrytised (noble rot) dessert wines.
Over on the right bank, you have Pomerol and Saint Emilion, among others, where Merlot is the dominant grape variety. Also, Cotes de Bordeaux (slopes of Bordeaux) which has the sub-regions of Blaye, Cadillac, Francs and Castillon. The region offers good value Bordeaux wines.
Entre-deux-Mers is predominantly a white wine region (any red wine has to be generic Bordeaux).
