- Paso Robles with Jason Haas from Tablas Creek Vineyard
Overview
The Paso Robles AVA is located on the central coast of California and is separated from the ocean by mountains. The Mediterranean climate is warm during the day, cold at night, with a big diurnal temperature swing.
Tablas Creek is owned by Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. They wanted to plant Rhone varieties in the USA and decided Paso was the best match in terms of its soils, geology and climate. At the beginning they brought over cuttings of the Rhone varieties and even established their own nursery which is now supplying growers along the coast.
The vineyards are on the west side which is wetter and a little cooler than the east of the Paso Robles AVA and has limestone soils. The focus is on Mourvedre for the reds and Roussanne for whites.
