Overview
The Porto Protocol was founded by Taylor's Port and has 250 members around the world representing all parts of wine's value chain from producers and growers right through to packaging and design companies. Their collective mission is to find workable solutions to tackle the challenges of climate change.
Marta Mendonca is the head of impact at the organisation, responsible for 4 impact areas:
1. Packaging
2. Water
3. Ecosystem
4. Seeding the future
Collaborative networks between companies are being created to work together to make wine more sustainable. One such example is to do with the packaging, namely glass bottles, through a scheme called Bottle Loop for reusable bottles. But actually reusing (not just recycling) wine bottles is not straightforward and can be quite a complicated process involving washing bottles, removing labels and the reverse logistics needed to get the bottle back from the consumer or business via deposit return schemes.
