- Wine in Denmark with Carl Frederik Stub Trock
Overview
Carl Frederik Stub Trock is owner of Stub Vineyards on the Røsnæs peninsula in Zealand, about a 150km drive west of Copenhagen.
Although a nation of beer drinkers, there is a trend towards wine-drinking, as consumption of beer falls. White wine consumption is growing with Italian, German and French wines the most popular. The market consists of many small producers with only a handful of larger commercial wineries existing in Denmark.
The most significant winemaking region is the 'DONS' area in Jutland which is Denmark’s first PDO (Protected Designation of Origin)
Located in the Røsnæs region of Zealand, Stub vineyard has 1.5 hectares and is one of 5 vineyards Carl is chairman of the local vineyard association and they have recently applied for EU designation as Denmark's second wine PDO.
The rest of the country's vineyards are spread out across the main islands of Denmark. The area under vine has tripled over the last few years from a very small base but there is interest, with more investors coming to Denmark to establish vineyards. Most of the industry is about 20-25 years old with very little evidence of vines being planted pre-1930s and no real winemaking tradition.
