- Grafting Vines with Sam Doncaster Part 1
Overview
Sam Doncaster is an expert on viticulture and in this episode shares his knowledge of grafting. Prior to the Phylloxera outbreak in the late 19th century, wine producers didn't graft vines but afterwards it became common practice to graft European vines (Vitis Vinifera) onto American root stocks which are resistant to phylloxera (louse).
It is a global industry with specialist root stock growers or nurseries who collect virus free bud wood (scion wood). The scion wood starts out as canes which grow longer and longer. Sam explains how the root stock needs to accept the new bud that has been grafted on and techniques to help increase the success rate.
