- WSET Beer Courses with Jamie Percival
Overview
Jamie Percival takes us through the new WSET qualifications in beer - the Level 1 and 2 Awards in Beer. Jamie has been in the beer trade for 21 years, starting out as a young enthusiast behind the bar and moving to a full time cellarman. He then began working for breweries and trained as a beer sommelier before becoming a consultant to brewers and hospitality venues.
The courses are aimed at enthusiast beer drinkers who might already be aware of a few styles and want to try more, the home brewer who wants to learn how ingredients and techniques contribute in the beer making process, and professionals in the beer or hospitality industry to better understand the premium craft beer market.
Level 1 (a one day course) is good for basic, all-round beer understanding with 9-10 beers to sample a range of styles, find out how they have been created and how the ingredients influence the final beer. The Level 2 (a three day course) takes a deeper dive into this information with a much bigger range to try. The WSET categorises beers into ales, lagers and mixed fermentation and into four main types: malt-driven, hop-driven, yeast-driven and mixed fermentation styles.
