Greg Hay of Peregrine Wines has been involved in the Central Otago wine industry for 21 years. We talk to him about the Peregrine winery and the New Zealand sustainable wine programme
The Peregrine vineyard is managed under tbe NZ sustainable wine programme - not organic but pretty close. The Central Otago area is dry with low humidity which reduces fungal problems, pests and disease and makes sustainable viticulture easier to practise. Sustainability is about maintaining the integrity of the land in a way that is beneficial to the land, the grapes and the consumer. It means changing your thinking process and becoming custodians of the land. It is also an auditable process and accredited. Greg is concerned about the lack of consumer education - people understand Organics but Sustainability is less clear. By 2012 all New Zealand vineyards are required to follow the sustainable programme. In a competitive industry sustainability will be key to maintaining the image of New Zealand as the cleanest, greenest, purest country to buy wine from.
